Pacer Test: Beating the Boys

Ping. 

Sweat trickled down my face.

Ping. 

I had to beat the boys. But how?

Ping. 

Boys always nail these competitions, right?

Ping. 

Wrong. Not this time.

Ping. 

I was going to be the exception to the usual stereotype that boys beat girls in athletics.

Ping. 

I was on Level 16 and my heart was beating, awaiting the dreaded–

Ping. 

Back and forth, back and forth.

Ping. 

For the duration of the Pacer Test, my head was down, watching my feet pass swiftly across the gym floor.

Ping.

I had failed, however, to notice that I was the last one standing.

Ping.

The last girl standing, that is.

Ping.

Amongst a throng of boys.

Ping.Ping.

The sounds came faster and faster.

Ping.Ping.Ping.

It was just me and Johnny left.

Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping. 

Alex, don’t give up.

Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping.

Not yet.

Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping.Ping.

Victory.
